Every city is unique, with its geographical location, population composition, culture and history. But urbanisation is taking place at an increasing pace all over the world, and the challenges that come with it tend to be similar. The solutions, on the other hand, are diverse and therefore worth studying.

south tangerangCity governments often have the same balancing act: economic growth versus social policy, modernisation and preservation of identity, new construction and nature conservation, to name a few. How do you ensure that a city develops while benefiting residents?

wim van den doelWim van den Doel, dean of Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Universties: 'The city council named themes such as the well-being of local communities, environmental health, innovations and digitalisation as important for the future of South Tangerang. And even though the scale on which everything happens here is of a different order, these are similar issues that are also at play in cities like The Hague and Rotterdam. So we can learn from each other.'
