Re-imagining Learning: Augmenting Learning in Higher Education. The opportunities and challenges of the use of AR and VR in education and research
In spite of the blazing heat, on 25 June an international, multidisciplinary group gathered at incubator PLNT, Leiden to discuss the opportunities and challenges brought about by the use of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) in education and research.
This event, organised by Leiden University’s Centre for Innovation and the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Centre for Education and Learning showed us new, cutting edge apps in AR and VR for education. One of the keynote speakers was professor Marcus Specht, scientific director of the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Centre for Education and Learning. Find all presentations underneath this article.
At the event, the Centre for Innovation and the Leiden University Medical Centre launched their Augmented Medicine application: Lung Cases. This app allows future doctors to train themselves with AR across a wide range of scenarios in diagnosing patients that present with shortness of breath. Holograms of healthy or diseased lungs are projected onto colleagues or students and a virtual stethoscope can be used to listen to healthy and abnormal lung sounds. In this way, students and professionals can practise listening to real live lung sounds. The response from the 100+ participants was enthusiastic, and everyone was interested in testing the app during the event marketplace. Read more about the Lung Case (in Dutch).
