Professor John Goddard, expert op het gebied van de civic university heeft voor de nieuwe strategie, in maart 2018 een bezoek gebracht aan de universiteiten Leiden-Delft-Erasmus. Hiervoor heeft hij bestuurders en betrokkenen bij de centres geïnterviewd. Dit was de basis voor een advies of de LDE centres een goede vorm zijn om de doelen van de alliantie te behalen. Zijn conclusie is dat de centres een effectief instrument zijn voor de samenwerking en het verbinden van de universiteiten met de maatschappij. Hij adviseert de succesvolle centres verder te laten groeien en van een steviger, gezamenlijke organisatorische basis te voorzien.
Prof. Goddard: 'The LDE Alliance is a globally distinctive and pioneering initiative in many respects. It brings together researchers from different disciplines and from different institutions in the same region. It supports the sharing of teaching across the institutions in the prioritized areas. Above all it ensures that the shared work is undertaken in partnership with civil society, exhibiting many features of the civic university model which is gaining ground around the world not least in The Netherlands where the government has launched support for ‘City Deals’, linking universities and municipalities.'
